Abstract
The purpose of this study is to suggest effective teaching methods using movies to improve middle school students' communicative competence with a base of integrated four language skills. Many researchers have already studied on the educational usefulness of movies and proved positive results from them. Using movies as teaching material will be able to elicit positive effects for the second language learners, because they include integral elements of contemporary entertainment. Movies can bring authentic communicative circumstances into the classroom, and accordingly students have an opportunity to experience indirectly native speakers interacting with each other in real-life context. Movies are also helpful toward both cultural understanding and long term memory with vivid images and sounds.
Some specific selection standards are needed to choose movie for educational purposes, and While You Were Sleeping was picked to meet them. Using the movie While You Were Sleeping, I suggested five lesson plans designed to integrate the four language skills such as listening, speaking, reading and writing. Each lesson plan follows instructional models devised by Allan basically, so each procedure is divided into pre-viewing, viewing, and post-viewing. In the pre-viewing stage, students prepare viewing movies in order to learn new vocabulary and predict the story from some selected scenes. The viewing stage is divided into watching movie without subtitle, watching movie with Korean subtitle, and watching movie with English subtitle concretely in connection with various activities to participate in. The post viewing stage guides students into writing activities such as making character webs and news writing on the basis of pre-viewing and viewing stage.
Though this study has some limitations that doesn't apply in real class and doesn't consider students' differences such as their various interests or level differences in English learning ability, it will be a certainly effective material to improve the communicative competence with continuous supplementary efforts. Seeking out effective lesson plans using movies is worthwhile to maximize the pedagogical potential of the class.
