Abstract
This study expresses the beliefs of kindergarten teachers on children and early childhood teachers as metaphors. By analyzing the meaning behind such metaphors, and investigating kindergarten teachers' beliefs on children and early childhood teachers through such meaning, this study is to understand the actual belief of the teachers, and to obtain practical implications regarding early childhood teacher education.
The study objects of this study are as follows.
1. What is the kindergarten teachers' metaphor on children like?
2. What is the kindergarten teachers' metaphor on early childhood teachers like?
As study subjects, 253 kindergarten teachers working in private kindergartens in Busan were gathered, and total 208 teachers were include in the final data analysis. Study tool used open-ended questionnaire, and collected qualitative data referred to Metaphor Analysis by Moser (2000), for an accurate interpretation of metaphor. Using SPSS 18.0, study data was analyzed on the frequency by categories, and percentage, and the test was performed on the difference of metaphor frequencies based on the study subjects' background.
Results of the study objects presented are as follows.
First, regarding the belief on children, many acknowledged children as active individuals with potential value, rather than passive individuals at blank slate or adult imitators.
Second, regarding early childhood teachers, the ratio of beliefs considering the teachers active and passive were similarly created.
Third, the beliefs on children or early childhood teachers did not show differences based on the factors such as age, education, qualification, career, or class in charge.
This study was to analyze kindergarten teachers' metaphors on children and early childhood teachers. This will help understand various aspects of teachers' beliefs on children and early childhood teachers. Also, by studying the kindergarten teachers' opinion on children and early childhood teachers more deeply, the existence of children and early childhood teachers can be reviewed reflectively, and different viewpoints can be formed.
