Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze relations between meanings of the polysemic verb toru with the core schema and shed light on its derivative relations between meanings.
To be specific, the polysemic verb toru has two oppositive meaning; 「acquisition」and「elimination」.「acquisition」has many meanings such as 「harvest」,「ingest」,「steal」and so on. And「elimination」also has many meanings such as「take off glasses」,「relieve tired」,「remove dust」and so on.
Japanese language learners might have a question why these meanings, which are even seen as oppositive meanings, are expressed by same word the verb toru. Also learners of japanese as a foreign language has difficulty in understanding semantic commonness, unity of these meanings. Therefore this study examines correlations between the derivative meanings with the core schema of the cognitive semantics.
Firstly, this study looks up the meanings of the verb toru in the dictionary daijirin. The meanings are classified into 72 detail meanings under 10 entries in the daijirin. This classification method is useful in the cognitive analysis.
Secondly, this study quotes the Matsuda’s core schema and grasps the derivative relation between the meanings of the verb toru by using focalization. And it makes new cognitive focus by improving the drawback of the Matuda’s core schema.
As a result, this study draws the following conclusions.
Firstly,『acquisition』and『elimination』, the verb toru’s meaning, are not oppositive meaning but the same movement differently perceived by actant’s purpose.
Secondly, it is by using the core schema that it is possible to verify that several usages of the verb toru are not separate relations but an organic relation, derivative relations.
Thus, the semantics description using the core schema makes language learners understand the various meanings of the verb toru by expressing the meanings as an imagine and helps them acquire polysemy.
