Food Type and Concentration on the Early Growth of Neomysis nigra
Abstract
The effect of food type and concentration on the early growth of Neomysis nigra was investigated in the laboratory. Predation rates on Aretemia sp. and ingestion rates on phytoplankton were also investigated. Three types of foods (a diatom Nitzschia sp.; a flagellate Tetraselmis suecica; the combination of Nitzschia sp. and T. suecica) were fed at different food concentrations. Predation rates of mature female were highest, followed by immatures. There was no significant difference in ingestion rates on food types between T. suecica and Nitzschia sp. The mortalities of N. nigra were higher at Nitzschia sp. than other food types. The growth rates of N. nigra juvenile were highest at feeding T. suecica and lowest at feeding Nitschia sp. The growth rates of N. nigra were significantly higher at the concentrations of 40,000 and 80,000 cells mL-1 than those at 10,000 and 20,000 cell mL-1. Although the growth rates of N. nigra were lower than previous studies, SGRs from hatching to 4th molting stage were similar to previous studies.
