Abstract

Compare to the importance of legislative activities of incumbent members, research on the relationship between legislative activities and re-election of members is insufficient to other related studies. The main purpose of this study is to analyze 'how do legislative activities, which can be seen as one of the candidate factors affecting the incumbency advantage, affect the re-election of incumbent members?' Along with the quantitative increase in legislative activity of incumbent members, interest in how legislative activities of incumbent members affect their re-election continues to grow. The analysis results are as follows. First of all, regression analysis shows that legislative activity variables have a limited positive impact on the re-election of members. In Model 2, 'the number of enactment proposals', 'the number of passed representative proposals', and 'the number of Home style representative proposals' positively affected the re-election of incumbent members. In addition, among the variables of legislative activity, 'the number of Home style representative proposals' presented in this study was statistically more significant than the 'number of enactment proposals', 'the number of simple representative proposals', and 'the number of passed representative proposals'. It was found in Model 2 and Model 3 presented in this study. In addition, by confirming that the 'Home Style representative proposals' variable has a significant positive influence through the comprehensive model, Model 3, the theoretical discussion of 'legislative activities as incumbency advantage' assumed in this study have been demonstrated in part through empirical analysis. In other words, these findings suggest that incumbent members can increase their chances of re-election in the next election by legislative activities for their constituency. In sum, this study was limited, but it was able to demonstrate the importance of 'legislative activities as candidate factors' and 'legislative activities as incumbency advantage' through empirical analysis. In particular, the analysis of the influence of legislative activities of members in re-election through the variable 'Home Style representative proposals' may be important to this study. It seems necessary to establish a structured theoretical discussion that overcomes the limitations of this study through more rigorous data construction and various variables with high validity.
