- Abstract
- There are various wireless communication devices present in metropolitan rapid transit known as metro. In the metro, for the safety of passengers, platform screen door (PSD) systems are in operation. PSD is run via wireless control using the industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) radio bands, which affects its reliable operation due to possible interference from ever-increasing wireless devices installed around metro stations or held by passengers. This thesis proposes visible light communication (VLC) based PSD control system. As VLC has no interference problem with other wireless devices and does not require frequency license, the proposed system is best suited to the metro PSD control. In order to validate the proposed system, experiments are conducted using light emitting diodes (LEDs) and photodetectors (PDs) at reasonable distances. In addition, optical filters are utilized in order to reduce the effect of light noise present in the environments. Experiment results show that the proposed system provides an accurate control mechanism with a high level of reliability over reasonable and practical distances.
