Abstract
Abstract

This thesis is to analyze results from a survey which was conducted on underachieving mathematics students. The study was conducted on 3 groups of 32 (Grade 2) middle school students who attended ‘H’ middle school in ‘B’ district. The survey asked each student on their awareness of the basic concepts of simple equations, monomial multiplications / divisions, and polynomial multiplications. The following are the results.
First, the results show that in regards to simple equations students found short -answer questions more difficult to solve than multiple choice questions. After the survey was conducted the student where taught how to solve the problems using binomial transposition and also by converting the fraction to integers. As a direct result, the students were able to both solve short-answer and multiple choice questions on simple equations by using substituting figures. They were also able to solve descriptive questions using binomial transposition.
Second, the students tended to make mistakes when faced with monomial multiplications / divisions. The errors were mostly due to the misusage of signs or errors in calculations. They had great difficulty using reciprocal numbers and exponential laws.
Third, the students found using distributive laws easier than using product formulas in polynomial multiplications.
In conclusion, using repetitive learning methods or customized gradual learning methods will be effective on students who have difficulties in simple equations and calculating monomials / polynomials. Students will learning difficulties in mathematics have less time to study the basics of mathematical calculations and concepts in school due to regularly scheduled classes and after school programs. They need more opportunity to go back to the basic as they will not find time their own to learn.
