- The Mediating Effect of Child's Perspective Taking Ability on the Relationship of Maternal Verbal Control Style and Child's Self-Regulation
- Abstract
- This study examined the mediating effect of child's perspective taking ability between maternal verbal control style, and child's self-regulation.
The subjects in this study were 162 children and their mothers at two kindergartens and three daycare centers located in the city of Busan. They were 82 boys and 80 girls who were recruited from classes with 4-5 year olds. The instrument used to assess child's self-regulation was Kim Hwa-ja(2008)'s Questionnaire for Teachers, and the maternal verbal control style was assessed Lee Jin-seong(2006)'s Verbal Control Style Questionnaire. As for the child's perspective taking ability, Gang Yeon-jeong(2001)'s Personal Interview for Perspective Taking was utilized.
The collected data were analyzed by a statistical package SPSS 21.0. Statistical data on frequency and percentage were obtained to find out about general characteristics, and another statistical data on mean and standard deviation for each variable were acquired to grasp descriptive trends in the variables. To address Research Question 1, product- moment correlation coefficients were calculated, and as for Research Question 2, a hierarchical regression analysis was made to see if the verbal control style of the mothers affected the self-regulation of the preschoolers by the medium of their perspective taking skills. To test the statistical significance of the mediating effects, Sobel test was used to conduct Z(ab)-test.
The findings of the study were as follows:
First, as a result of analyzing the relationships among the verbal control style of the mothers, the child's perspective taking ability of the and their self-regulation, mother's imperative control had a significant negative correlation with child's self-regulation, whereas positional control and personal control had no significant correlation with that. Children whose perspective taking ability was better were more excellent in self-regulation, and mother's imperative control and positional control had a significant negative correlation with the child's perspective taking abilities.
Second, as a result of analyzing whether the perspective taking skills of the preschoolers produced any mediating effects when the verbal control style of the mothers impacted on their self-regulation, the perspective taking skills of the preschoolers produced fully mediating effects when mother's imperative control exerted an influence on self-regulation.
