Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the meaning of participation in learning community of early childhood teachers and to investigate awareness of teachers on changes for infants' body and in practice of education. The selected research problems to attain the purpose of this study are as follows.
First, what is the meaning of participation of early childhood teachers in professional learning community?
Secondly, what are the changes in awareness of teachers towards the body of infants through professional learning community?
Thirdly, what are the changes in the practice of education of Green Kindergarten that appeared through professional learning community?
To this end, a professional learning community was organized with 3 teachers from Green Kindergarten, and the operation period was for approximately 6 months from Sep 2014 to Feb 2015. Discussion materials, journals by researchers, observation cases, self-reflection diary of participants, activity materials of participants, lesson plans, and class pictures were collected, and the collected data was analyzed through integration and organization of data, open coding through segmentation and early coding, in-depth coding, and discovery phase of the topic.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, for the meaning of participation in professional learning community of teachers from Green Kindergarten, teachers felt new appreciation towards learning and teachers, who had to resolve problems on their own, gained community spirit of mutual cooperation by helping each other out with difficulties. Also, they showed attitude of putting effort in understanding and respecting the body of infants while reflecting on their classes on infant's body and freedom and on their behavior towards the class, and they actively participated in learning to become a better teacher.
Secondly, participation in professional learning community also brought changes in the awareness of teachers on the body of infants. Teachers were indifferent to the body of infants at first, but they gradually
tried to understand them with interest, and realized the functionality and importance of inants' body through learning community that the body of infants was deficient in many aspects compare to the adults. Also, they realized that the body becomes the purpose and gains independence from body that became the other and has been ruled out from the center.
Thirdly, for changes in practice of education through professional learning community, closed space that halted free movement of infants changed into free space, and prearranged time by teachers' plan changed to the schedule to satisfy what infants' body demands. Also, an obedient relationship of following directions between teacher and infants changed to an equal relationship of cooperating with each other, and putting emphasis on rules changed to emphasizing on the embodied experience of infants.
Through this study, the reality of professional learning community composed of teachers was verified, identified the meaning of participation in learning community, and how experience in body in the learning community was being reflected and changed the actual classes.
