Monthly variation of zooplankton community of Tongyeong, South Korea
Abstract
The monthly variation of zooplankton community was investigated at two stations near Yokji island (St. 1) and Saryang island (St. 2) of Tongyeong, South Korea. Zooplankton was collected vertically using a RN80 net (80 ㎝ diameter with 330 ㎛ mesh) from June 2013 to October 2014. Zooplankton community consisted of 97 taxa including 48 copepods. Total densities ranged at the station 1 from 26.63 inds.m-3 in January to 1531.79 inds.m-3 in March and at the station 2 from 24.45 inds.m-3 in December to 1921.75 inds.m-3 in April, respectively. Abundance of zooplankton was the highest in February and March at the station 1. At the station 2,, the abundance of zooplankton was highest in April, followed by in August. Copepoda dominated the zooplankton community throughout the year. Oncaea venusta was most dominant species. Centropages tenuiremis, Calanus sinicus, Candacia discaudata, Acartia omorii, and Calanoidae copepodite also showed relatively higher abundance. Calanus sinicus was most abundant in April at the station 2. Centropages tenuiremis was most abundant in March at the station 1.
The variations in dominant species density between stations and months were found to be correlated with the environmental conditions. Zooplankton abundance was strongly correlated with temperature. Zooplankton community in Tongyeong showed typical characteristics of temperate waters, which were dominated by a few species.
