쿠바 산테리아의 기원와 역사적 특징 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 스페인 식민시기부터 쿠바에 정착한 아프리카 기원 종교인 산테리아의 역사를 분석한 것이다. 21세기 이후 쿠바에서 종교 활동의 자유화가 진행되면서, 많은 쿠바인들은 산테리아를 '흑인들만의 종교'로 인식하는 것이 아니라 쿠바의 '문화적 정체성'으로 인식하는 경향이 있다. 특히 많은 해외관광객들이 쿠바로 여행을 오기 시작하고, 이들이 '올드 아바나'의 문화유산 거리를 거닐면서 산테리아와 관련한 많은 종교물품을 사기 시작하면서, 산테리아의 위상은 대외적으로 쿠바를 대표하는 중요한 상징이 되었다. 본 연구는 산테리아에 대한 쿠바인의 인식과 정체성을 연구하기 위한 사전 단계라고 볼 수 있으며, 쿠바에서 산테리아의 정체성이 무엇인지를 파악하기 위하여, 먼저 이 종교의 기원과 역사에 대한 면밀한 분석을 시도하고 있다. 이 연구를 바탕으로 향후 산테리아의 정체성이 현재 쿠바 문화의 특징을 구성하는데 어떤 영향을 미치고 있는 가에 대해 분석할 수 있을 것이다.

The study analyzes the history of Santeria, an African-originated religion that settled in Cuba since the Spanish colonial period. With the liberalization of religious activities in Cuba since the 21st century, many Cubans tend to perceive Santeria as a "cultural identity" of Cuba, rather than a "religion only for blacks." In particular, as many foreign tourists began to travel to Cuba and began to buy many religious items related to Santeria as they walked through the cultural heritage streets of Old Havana, the status of Santeria became an important symbol of Cuba. This study is a preliminary step toward studying Cuban perceptions and identities of Santeria and is first attempting a close analysis of the origin and history of the religion to determine what Santeria is in Cuba. Based on this study, we will be able to analyze how the identity of Santeria is affecting the construction of the characteristics of Cuban culture in the future.
