Selection of Mixed Culture Composition for Improvement of Reducing Sugar Production Yield from Brown Seaweed Polysaccharides
- Abstract
- The world is facing the gradual depletion of non-renewable energy and environmental pollution. The disposal and reutilization of treating fishery waste has become an important issue. Brown seaweed is produced most abundantly in Korea and some parts of it has been used as a source of healthy food and pharmaceutical agent, but remained materials are usually wasted. This waste is mainly composed of laminarin and alginate. To reutilize brown seaweed waste, six novel strains were isolated from marine environment. Only two strains, EJ2 and EJ3, did not possess laminarinase and alginate lyase activity. However different strain, EJ4, had remarkable laminarinase and alginater lyase activity. Thus, we use four strains for analysis of interactions between them in flask unit. The interactions of EJ1, EJ4 and EJ5 were the most productive than other laminarin culture. TLC analysis showed that disaccharides were produced by EJ1, EJ4 and EJ5 and monosaccharides were produced by EJ4 and EJ6. We will investigate to get a higher yield from mixed culture to single culture by diverse ratio of strains.
