Subcontractor Selecting with DEA and AHP Model in Vietnamese Construction Projects
- Abstract
- In the construction of most projects, a significant role is played by specialty contractors, also common referred to as subcontractors. Deciding whether to invite subcontractors or not and how to select the best subcontractor on a project is regarded as one of the big challenges faced by general contractors. The decision – marking problem involves the consideration of several factors such as the difficulty of items, ability of the main contractors or the market and so on. Although several researchers have targeted the subject of bidding in construction, none of them has tackled the subcontractor bid invitation/no invitation problem in particular. The purpose of this study is to propose an empirical framework for making the subcontractor bid invitation/ no invitation decision and model for selecting the best subcontractor. The proposed model consists of four consecutive components. Component 1 determines key factors that are considered by main contractors when evaluating items. Project engineer, project managers, contract managers at contracting organizations including general contractors and subcontractors were interviewed to identify factors that affect the bid invitation/no invitation decision. Component 2 suggests data envelopment analysis (DEA) model to make the bid invitation/no invitation decision. Component 3 identify the factors influencing the subcontractor selecting. Lastly, component 4 suggests the AHP model for subcontractor selection.
