A Study of Fire Safety Vulnerability and Enhancement through the Evacuation Experimental in Recuperation Facility Aged

Jung Chul Kim Department of Fire Protection Engineering, The Graduate School, Pukyong National University Abstract Aging population in Korea is growing, then rising to 40% of all population demographically in 2060. For these social trend, the number of senior welfare facilities is getting bigger and bigger every year and so is senior citizen living in this facilities. These facilities are vulnerable to all types of disaster compared to other architecture because of the weakness of elderly people and these vulnerability shows well at the fire of recuperation facility of aged in Pohang(2010) and Recuperation Facility in Jangseong-gun(2014) Out of senior welfare facilities regulated on law of elderly welfare(article 31), this thesis will focus on the senior nursing home providing food service and medical treatment for the elderly with Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease by means of reviews, research and scene investigation and we’d like to raise questions through analysis of evacuation of senior nursing home. By the result of survey of senior nursing home in Busan, awareness of how to use fire fighting equipment is very high but how to evacuate and staff’s capability for safeguarding are very low. In order to improve staff’s response capability, proving fire evacuation guidelines and fire drill are recommendable, also legal criteria for installment of fire fighting equipment and evacuation equipment are being met but enacting of related regulations for installation position such as where to open fireproof shutter or shut down evacuation passage is critical. In case of a slope way, there must be a exceptional codes for senior nursing home if elevator installed or in case of no a slope way installed, installing evacuation equipment should be reinforced legally and institutionally.
