- Abstract
- The position of Korea’s shipbuilding industry has been now in trouble though Korean has kept the top position in the sales volume in 2000s. To keep the top position in the world, the technological improvement in the shipbuilding industry, the technological development for the high valued ships and marine leisure ship are required to fend off the competition from other countries and to benefit from the newly booming leisure and cruiser ship industry.
Accordingly, Korean government plans to help the domestic shipbuilding industry to reinforce their market dominance and lead the industry in the world through the technological development and product differentiation in the ships and marine products in its mid- and long-term development plan for the marine and shipbuilding industry and ‘Vision for shipbuilding and marine industries 2020’.
In this study, the focus is made on the design contribution to the shipbuilding industry because the design has been low in its return on the investment. The design which is high in its return on investment will be the growth engine for the shipbuilding industry. Among the marine leisure ship, the focus is made on the diving boat which is in the initial stage in its introduction to Korea as its design involvement is relatively easy. As the basic studies in the development of various types of ships, Chapter 1 will describe the background, purpose, scope and method of the study. Chapter 2 will describe the current status, prospect and analysis of marine and leisure industry, the necessity of the introduction of design due to the change in the perception in the industry, the analysis of current state of the domestic marine and leisure equipment industry, and the possibility of the connectivity to the shipbuilding industry due to the change of design paradigm and its role.
In Chapter 3, the concepts of underwater leisure activities, scuba and diving boats will be checked and then through the analysis and research of the users of the scuba diving equipment and ship for the scuba diving used in Korea and overseas, the required design development items will be described. The main concepts in the development of the diving boats are as follows.
1. The sufficient space for the divers for their activities and equipment storage shall be provided to the divers by the application of the hull in the form of catamaran ship or trimaran for more space in the upper deck.
2. The wide step is used to help the divers to have the smooth diving.
3. The lift or triple type ladders is used to help the divers to easily get out of the sea.
4. The engine power is to be enhanced in consideration of the weight of the diving equipment.
Chapter 4 sums up the required items which are found in Chapter 3 and describes the concept design using the morphological analysis. In the conclusion in Chapter 5, the results obtained from the study are comprehensive summed up.
I think that if the design for the diving boat is conducted using the morphological analysis of the diving boat prepared based on the key concepts and questionnaire researches, the concept design can be rapidly obtained. In this study, as the engineering features have not been fully taken into account in the design of diving boat, the results of the study may be used in the planning stage only. But if the items are added or changed depending on the technological development and purpose of use, the results of this study can be used in various ways.
