Abstract

This is a comparative study on political leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi and Park Gyen Hye, with transactional, transformational, and creative leaderships. It is important to understand a political leadership in any country. For feminism it is also significant to study two female political leaders in Asia: Aung San Suu Kyi in the Myanmar pro-democracy and Park Geun Hye who is the first female president of the Republic of Korea. Aung San Suu Kyi was born on June 19, 1945 in Yangon, Myanmar, a country traditionally known as Burma. Her Father, Formerly the de facto prime minister of British Burma, was assassinated in 1947. Her mother, Khin Kyi was appointed ambassador to India in 1960. Suu Kyi obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oxford in 1969, and in 1972, she married Michael Aris, a Scholar in Bhutanese Studies. Her family spent the 1970s and ‘80s in England, the United States and India. In 1988, Suu Kyi returned to Burma to care for her dying mother, and her life took a dramatic turn. She has suffered for 15 years under house arrest because of democratization movement. In 1991, Suu Kyi was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace. She has also received the a lot of Prize all over the world. Park Geun Hye was born on February 2, 1952. Her father was Park Chung-hee, President of South Korea from 1962 to 1979. She graduated from Seoul's Jangchung Elementary School and Sungshim (literal: Sacred Heart) Girls' Middle &High School in 1970, going on to receive a bachelor's degree in electronic engineering from Sogang University in 1974. She briefly studied at the University of Grenoble, but left France following the assassination of her mother. She was the First Lady after her mother’s death. And now she is the first woman to be elected as President in South Korea and is serving the 18th presidential term. Both Aung San Suu Kyi and Park Gyen Hye have transformational rather than transactional leadership. However Park Gyen Hye has creative leadership, but Aung San Suu Kyi does not.
