A study on the beach erosion prevention using the artificial seaweed
Abstract
The beach profile and sediment transport are very important factors in the design of coastal structure and erosion prevention, and the beach profile is mainly affected by a number of parameters, such as wave condition, beach slope, and the material properties of the bed. Recently, the study on the wave attenuation and beach erosion prevention by vegetation has been investigated by many researchers of the world, but the detailed mechanisms of wave attenuation and beach erosion prevention by vegetation is not well understood.
In order to impact assessment for wave attenuation(energy reduction) and beach(coastal) erosion prevention by artificial seaweed, this present studies are carried out by the 2-Demensional hydraulic experiment and numerical model test. This experimental study investigated beach(coastal) erosion geometry under the influence of the regular waves of normal/storm incident wave and the conditions of with/without artificial seaweed(vegetation).
Main results obtained are summarized as follows by the step of study: 1) Beach change under conditions without artificial seaweed(vegetation) showed the retreat of coastline and increase of longshore bar height by the attack of the normal and storm incident wave conditions. 2) Beach change under conditions with artificial seaweed(vegetation) of 1B(width=0.8m) and 2B(width=1.6m) showed the deposition phenomenon and advance of coastline in the offshore direction.
Through the above results, the artificial seaweed(vegetation) will affect the change in the cross section of beach and it is possible to take advantage of beach erosion prevention method.
