An Empirical Study on improvement of Team's Innovation Performance in Total Quality Management : The Moderating Effects of Team Absorptive capacity
Abstract
This study suggests that the Total Quality Management(TQM) has significant effects on the team's innovation performance. And team absorptive capacity moderates the relationship between TQM and innovation performance.

To test the hypotheses, data were collected from the teams in Busan&Kyoung-Nam. Survey questionnaires were distributed to 122 teams. Of the 122 teams, 100 teams responded to the questionnaire (83.0% response rate). 8 teams were excluded that had incomplete responses.

Two dimensions of TQM were considered in the model: Leadership and Followship. TQM was measured using 16 items. The absorptive capacity was measured using 8 items. The innovation performance was measured using 8 items. In addition, this study used five control variables including R&D team, industry type, team magnitude, market dynamism and competitiveness.

Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to examine the hypotheses. First, when entering the control variables in step one, R&D team, industry type, team magnitude, market dynamism and competitiveness were statistically significant in predicting the innovation performance. This result shows the validity of using them as control variables.

Second, when entering the TQM as well as control variables in step two, the result showed that TQM had significant and positive effect on the innovation performance. This result implies that TQM is an important to promote their innovation.

Third, when entering the team absorptive capacity as well as control variables, and the independent variables in step three, the result showed that the team absorptive capacity had non-significant effects on the innovation performace.

Fourth, when entering the interaction terms of TQM and team absorptive capacity, the result showed that the interaction between absorptive capacity and followship had negative and significant effect on the innovation performance. And ihe interaction between absorptive capacity and leadership had positive and significant effect on the innovation performace. These results support for the moderating effects of team absorptive capacity on the relationship between TQM and team innovation performace.

Based on the empirical results several theoretical and practical implications were suggested.
