Abstract

The consumers of this era are utilizing various media to accept and share information according to the flow of the era, namely the age of information. In circumstances in which the media of conveyance is diversified, magazines have come up with new forms of design, rather than altering the past designs, maximizing the importance of more efficient information conveyance. As the present concept of design is changing to a concept with variability rather than fixed form as the past, the magazines need designs accepting the complex demands and the responses of the consumers of today, rather than the fixed form and function. This research has especially focused on the changing form of the visual art magazines. Also, it has its purpose in analyzing the cover and the table of contents page design of domestic visual arts magazines from formative perspective, and to examine the modern editing design tendencies through characteristics for each year. First of all, from theoretical perspective, along with considerations for magazines and visual art, the analysis considered the visual formation factors to prepare the analysis criteria of this research, and segmented the layout, typography, image and color to carry out case study. As subject of case study, by focusing on the design, photography and art magazines, the subject was limited to 6 types of magazines, with 2 types of representative magazines for each genre, based on the outstanding contents magazine selected by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism from 2010 to 2016. As scope of time, the period was set from January 2010 to December 2015, analyzing total of 432 magazines for the cover analysis, and a total of 36 magazines, 1 per year according to the magazine design planning carried out in annual unit. In examination of the editing design tendencies of the visual art magazines through case analysis, it was examined that as the amount of text declined and as the amount of margins increased, the method of conveying the content became simpler. This is effective in conveying leisurely and stable emotions to the readers subscribing to the magazine, and provides the desire to possess the magazine as aesthetic perspective. This tendency shows the tendency of complying to the Normcore trend of pursuing ordinary and simple characteristics of the overall culture, and the representative example is the magazine. magazine pursuing slow life with margins layout the visual components simply and emphasize the margins to convey aesthetic emotions to the readers. However, the design applied to such trend may work as a factor hindering the original colors of the visual arts magazine that needs to attribute its own style and characteristic. Because this research focuses on the editing design tendencies of the visual art magazine, there are limitations to complement such problems. Because there are too many factors influencing a single subject, the role of design is not sufficient to anticipate radical changes. Therefore, it is hoped that the additional follow-up research in addition to the role of design made in this research would provide new motives to the visual art magazines to expand the magazine industry.
