The Comparative Study of Lyricism of Kim so-wol and Xu zhi-mo:Pivot on Love and Nature, Awareness of a reality
Abstract
This study is based on the comparation of the lyricism between two poets: Kim so-wol(Korea) and Xu zhi-mo(China). As one of the outstanding representative poets of their own country, Kim so-wol and Xu zhi-mo made a great contribution to the development of modern poetry.
Korea and China are both Asian countries, they share many similarities both in history background and contemporary literature. In 1919, after the March 1st Movement has failed, Korea, under the colonization by Japan, brought out the slogan “from force to literature reign”. This leads to some degree of freedom in many aspects such as publishing, public opinion and rally. In the meantime, some intellectuals began their exploration in the correspondences between reality and different culture. Under the influence of the Western European Literature, they created an opening for the ‘New Literature’.
Although the May 4th Movement has failed, China’s New Literature thought became active during this period, a certain period which was called The exploration of ‘Modern Poetry Movement’. It freed their mind to express their feelings and emotions, and encouraged the Vernacular Movement in many ways. By this time, Modern Poetry poets were springing up all over China. One of the most notable group is called ‘New Moon School’, founded by Xu zhi-mo, had a tremendous impact on Modern Chinese Literature.
Kim so-wol is a poet whose creation is based on traditional Korean lyricism. His poetry is a milestone at his age. Kim so-wol was called “national poet”, for his poetry reflected the anger and sorrow about the Korean subjugation and separation with his lover. As the founder of Chinese modern poetry, Xu zhi-mo played a decisive role. Affected by Western ideology and restricted by Chinese traditional feudal culture, Xu zhi-mo expressed very strong individualism in his pursuit for modernization. Moreover, his works have a strong perspective of romance. His early creation has beautiful rhythm and magnificent imagination, which was rich and flowery in diction and elegant in its artistic mood. And then, his deep thinking about the fate of his nation appeared in his late works. The differences and developments between his early and late words were deeply connected with the historical status.
Kim so-wol and Xu zhi-mo’s life has many similarities. From the perspective of history, South Korea became a colony after the invasion by Japan, while, under the aggression of the Western countries, China turned into a semi-feudal and semi-colonial country. Experienced the unrest, Korea and China has become fertile ground for modern poetry. These two distinguished poet was born at the same time, but died very young. Although they have similar life experiences and history backgrounds, they are totally different in writing styles and techniques based on their works.
This study analyzes and compared the characteristic of their lyrics from their own upbringing and background, and hopefully supports the comparative literature studies and cultural exchanges about the modern literature of both Korea and China.
