Abstract

Song Eun-hwa, 2016. Semantic Structure of Polysemous words ‘put up’: meaning analysis and meaning extension. This paper suggests and investigates cognitive and semantic approaches concerning the 'polysemy', and attempt to provide the semantic structure of ‘put up’, one of the representative polysemous words. Also this offers polysemous word ‘put up’ and meaning extensions, which are an important but unsolved issue of lexical semantics. First, we will analyze polysemous word ‘put up’ from prototype theory, which is from the usage-based model of Cognitive Linguistics. Also the meaning of polysemous word ‘put up’ can be analogize from the component of ‘put’ and ‘up’. And unexplainable meaning extensions are identified by metaphor and metonymy. The results of this study shows us affinity between core meaning of ‘put up’ and the meaning extension of ‘put up’. They are concerned about trajector’s position, direction, consequence. Thus the meaning of polysemous word ‘put up’ could be predicted from its componets, the following metaphor and metonymy are used the prototypical meaning and it is not idiosyncratic but follows a general pattern of language.
