A study on wear-resistance of Teflon coated bronze material
Abstract
Recently, as industries develop, professional skills are demanded in every fields. Necessity for more precise lubrication and corrosion resistance is increasing not only in machine industry, but also in electronic industry and ocean industry. Typical examples include: protection coating of optical fiber using chemical stability and corrosion resistance of DLC (diamond-like carbon film); lubricant coated micro-machine; Research on enhanced lubrication and wear-resistance for artificial joint and transplanted organs ; Research on enhanced corrosion resistance and its abrasion characteristic by metalizing DLC film on bearing still that are commonly used in ocean industry parts.
Maritime equipment and ships in ocean industry are exposed to high salinity, thereby vulnerable to corrosion with low durability. In fact, when corroded, strength of metal changes: when 1% thickness of metal rusted, strength decreases 5~10%. When corrosion occur, it is not mere rusting, instead, weakened durability can lead to disaster.
With these reasons, continuous research in order to fulfill mechanical properties such as corrosion resistance, wear resistance, lubrication, is being done; to achieve this, development of new material or surface enhancement is necessary. In this research, experiment on measurement of corrosion resistance to delay corrosion of bronze material that are highly exposed to sea water. Among many other industrial materials, Teflon, which has potential for various application, is used to form coating layer on bronze. As a result, surface coating heat-treatment characteristics of bronze is reviewed through analysis of test on organizational change, corrosion resistance research, wear-test and hardness change.
