통합적 교수법이 초급 성인 학습자의 영어 듣기·말하기 향상에 미치는 영향
- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of an integrated approach that combines some features of Audio-Lingual Method and Communicative Language Teaching for English listening and speaking skills improvement of beginning adult learners in Korea.
For this study, 23 adult learners studying in a private institute located in Busan participated in the study. They studied English to improve their listening and speaking skills for 2 months with an integrated approach in the beginner's class. They each had pre-listening and speaking tests and post-listening and speaking tests to evaluate their improvement of listening and speaking skills. They were also asked to answer questionnaires about learners' interests and self-confidence regarding learning English.
The main findings of the study are as follows. First, the beginning adult learners made a positive improvement in their listening and speaking skills. The degree of their listening improvement was about 21% and the degree of their speaking improvement was about 17%. Second, they made positive changes in the affective aspect of learning English. In particular, they showed positive attitudes toward the teaching method and they thought that repetition and memorizing of patterns was the most effective way to improve their communicative skills, followed by role playing.
These results are to suggest the following pedagogical implications. First, further research is needed regarding repetition of patterns for beginning adult learners which seems to affect positively on listening and speaking skills, even on the affective aspect, so teachers should make full use of it. Second, integrated lesson activities, especially role playing, shall be extended. Learners can activate their communicative skills based on what they have learned and it seems to be helpful for their affective aspect. An integrated approach would be very helpful to beginning adult learns. This suggests more studies related to this approach need to be developed.
