Study on Graphene/Epoxy Nanocomposites
Abstract
Graphene is known to have excellent properties, but still has problems with mass production. Therefore, many studies have been conducted to produce high quality and quantity graphene. In this study, graphite oxide was fabricated by modified Hummer’s method, which was modified at lab to obtain high quality and quantity graphene. Reduced graphene oxide(RGO) was obtained by the reducing of graphite oxide using hydrazine hydrate. And then, nanocomposites has fabricated using RGO and purchased graphene(graphene nanopowder, GNP) and epoxy resin, respectively. The properties of the two nanocomposites were investigated in detail.
Comparing with XRD patterns of graphite, purchased GNP and RGO, it was found that the high quality RGO could be obtained by Hummer’s method modified at lab. The highest tensile strength of RGO nanocomposites(0.3wt%) were higher than the ones of GNP nanocomposites(1wt%). Most tensile strength of GNP nanocomposites was slightly higher than the ones of RGO nanocomposites. The thermal stabilities of both nanocomposites were lower than the one of the pure epoxy. However, the decreasing rates of the thermal stabilities in RGO nanocomposites were smaller than the ones in GNP nanocomposites. Surface resistivity decreased with the content of graphene in both nanocomposites. Finally, the strengthening effect according to the addition of graphene in nanocomposites was observed in the fracture surface in SEM images.
