Database construction of physical property and characteristics for surficial sediment in the South Sea, Korea
Abstract
The physical and acoustic properties of sediments are closely related to the texture and composition of the sediments and are closely related to the sedimentary environment at the time the sediments were deposited and the subsequent sedimentation processes. In addition, the acoustic properties(sound velocity, attenuation, etc.) of subsea sediments are important in themselves, but direct measurement data can be helpful in analyzing data when seabed sediment layers are analyzed using seismic data.
The study area includes the South Sea, the South-East Sea and the southern part of the Yellow Sea. The preliminary study has been performed only for center of the South Sea and the South-East Sea.
Database was conducted on sediment analysis data of the study area conducted by both institutions(KIGAM and PKNU).
The statistical equations applicable to the entire study area were calculated through PKNU data, and were compared with the Hamilton (1970) model for verification.
Geoacoustic properties(ex, texture, porosity, water content, wet density, velocity etc) were calculated by statistical equations and distribution map of each characteristic value were able to create using the database.
The sequence stratigraphic results and the echo type results were very similar compared with distribution maps.
It is confirmed that sediment texture and physical properties are the main characteristics for the change of geoacoustic characteristics and it is applicable as a main parameter for geoacoustic province classification.
Finally, as a result of analyzing the physical properties, velocity, and sediment texture of the surface sediments throughout the study area, the geoacoustic provinces were classified into seven and characteristics of the geoacoustic provinces were presented.
