Abstract

The purpose of this study is to classify varied meanings of English verb ‘push’ to three meaning categories by analyzing the objective noun collocations from Corpus program and also to suggest corpus based meaning classifications to make easy understanding on verb ‘push’ in the case of reading and writing in English context. The study attempts searching high-frequency verb structures with noun through Corpus program, and compares English objective noun collocation with definitions in four kinds of Korean English dictionaries. The study approaches to the three meaning categorizations for the verb ‘push’ which are ‘force’, ‘press’ and ‘extend’, each group shows corresponding Korean expressions and they are based on the diagrams and statistics. They are summarized as follow. First, four kinds of Korean expressions are included in ‘Milgi’ categorization, and they are ‘Milda’, ‘Chujinhada’, and ‘Jujanghada’. Second, two Korean expressions are shown in the meaning categorization of ‘Nureum’, and they are ‘Nureuda’ and ‘Gangyohada’. Third, the categorization of ‘Hwakjang’ is narrowed to the two kinds of corresponding expression ‘Numda’ and ‘Nulpida’.
