The Transition of Employment Relations in the Enterprise Level of Myanmar : A Case of Korean Companies in Garment Industry during U Thein Sein Government
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the transition of employment relations in the enterprise level of Myanmar.
In order to achieve the purpose of this study, literature review was conducted to define the labor­related documents in Myanmar in order to systematically examine attempts at labor reform by U Thein Sein Government and interview method was proceeded to examine the transitions of employment relations in the enterprise level.
The subjects of the interview were two Korea companies in garment industry which is likely to have been relatively affected by labor reform and that went through a strike during U Thein Sein Government. The interview method is an interview with structured questions and the interviewees are managers and workers of each company.
Results of this study are as follow. Contents of the legislative amendment pursued by U Thein Sein government are applied to the enterprise level. The prohibition of child recruitment, the use of standard labor contracts, the application of paid holidays, the use of vacation / sick leave, and the establishment of trade unions are the changes in the employment relationship.
Although the employment relationship in Myanmar has been applied to the enterprise level by contents of the legislative amendment pursued by U Thein Sein Government, there has been no change in the actual work site and the lives of the workers due to the lack of response of users to the labor laws and legal protection of the government.
Based on results, this study suggests implications of findings and some directions for future study.
