Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the effect of role stress on expatriates' cultural adjustment and job performance. I also examine the effect of the individual factors (i.e., family status, prior willingness to work in Korea, job position, language fluency, length of service in Korea, previous oversea experience) on expatriates' cultural adjustment and job performance. Surveys were completed by 105 Japanese expatriates in Korea. Role ambiguity was found to influence work adjustment and job performance, while role conflict was found not to influence them. Work adjustment was a mediator between role ambiguity and job performance. The longer the length of service in Korea, the greater work adjustment and job performance, but family status, prior willingness to work in Korea, job position, language fluency, previous oversea experience did not influence work adjustment and job performance.
