Study of phytoplankton community structure derived from breakwater construction along the coastal waters
Abstract
This study was carried out effect of artificially constructed breakwater on phytoplankton community in coastal waters of Samcheok from February 2013 to October 2015. Phytoplankton observed in this study were 195 species in 5 taxa. In particular, diatoms and dinoflagellates were occupied 70.3%, 27.2% of total species, respectively. Phytoplankton standing crops ranged from 4 to 4,124 cells/mL(with a mean value of 622 cells/mL). The dominant species were Leptocylindrus danicus, Skeletonema spp., Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Pseudo-nitzschia spp., Chaetoceros curvisetus, C. socialis, Dactyliosolen fragilissimus and etc. In spring, phytoplankton standing crops were at bloom level showing more than 103 cells/mL. The environmental factors that showed positive correlation with phytoplankton standing crops were hydrogen ion concentration, dissolved oxygen and chlorophyll-a concentration(ρ<0.01). According to the cluster analysis, the phytoplankton community divided into the inside(St.1~3, 5,6) and mostly outside(St.4, 7~11) of breakwater. From the mean comparison analysis(Mann Whitney's U-test) between inside and outside of breakwater, zinc concentration and ecological indices were significantly different(ρ<0.05). There was no significant difference in phytoplankton standing crops, but there was a difference in community structure. Physicochemical factors may have caused differences in phytoplankton communities between inside and outside of breakwater , and these results suggested that the phytoplankton communities distribution was affected by artificially constructed breakwater. Therefore, that studies of spatial distribution of phytoplankton communities should be conducted continuously to monitor around breakwater in coastal area.
