- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to develop a Capstone Design evaluation system referring to the evaluation system of National Competence Standard (NCS) as a method to objectively evaluate the learning achievements of Capstone Design education in the field of visual design. To accomplish this, the following procedure was conducted.
First, the related documents were analyzed, and the requirement analysis for the evaluation system of the students, professors, and experts was conducted. A draft of the evaluation system was derived based on the results.
Second, the draft was verified by lecturers who teach Capstone Design at colleges, teaching-learning specialists, and on-site experts. Referring to the verification, the draft had been modified and supplemented, and reached to the finalization of the evaluation system.
The results of this study are as followed.
First, this thesis defines the Capstone Design in the field of visual design as ‘an overall training course for students to synthesize the knowledge they have learned, and to have actual job experience in industrial field of visual design through collaborating and presenting their outcomes’.
Second, although Capstone Design education in visual design area is being operated in colleges in accordance to the basic operational guidelines provided by the Korea Research Foundation, detailed guidelines for evaluation rely on each evaluator’s discretion. Therefore, the evaluations by the on-site experts and the evaluation on collaboration are not reflected explicitly. In this study, the evaluation areas were set up to develop the evaluation system which can be used in practice by integrating requirements of the on-site experts, professors and students, as well as by deriving the evaluation elements (contents, methods and tools) of each area.
Third, the use of performance evaluation tools in the National Competence Standard (NCS) evaluation system makes it possible to evaluate the process of Capstone Design, and enables objective evaluation by specifying evaluation criteria. This thesis classifies the core values of the Capstone Design in visual design by each evaluation area, and proposes the evaluation system for each evaluation process. Also, it develops the evaluation system by presenting performance targets using the performance criteria of NCS, enabling objective and efficient evaluation.
Fourth, vocational skills offered by NCS consist of communication skills, interpersonal skills, problem solving ability, and work ethics. Communication skills are related to the presentation evaluation and peer evaluation, interpersonal skills to peer evaluation, problem solving ability to journal evaluation, and work ethics to peer evaluation and journal evaluation. Therefore, the vocational skills that the student should have in order to perform the visual design job can also be evaluated by the developed evaluation system.
Fifth, this thesis develops the Capstone Design evaluation system in the field of visual design for colleges as follows.
① The evaluation system consists of seven evaluation systems according to evaluation guidelines, evaluation plans and evaluation procedures.
② The seven evaluation systems are diagnostic evaluation system, intermediate presentation evaluation system, peer-evaluation system, self-evaluation system, journal evaluation system, final presentation evaluation system and outcome evaluation system.
③ Each evaluation system includes rubrics for evaluation objectives, achievement standards, and evaluation items, and proposes detailed evaluation methods for utilizing the evaluation system.
