- Alternative Title
- A study on the macrobenthic community structure and its correlation with water temperature on the hard-bottoms of Jeju Island
- Abstract
- Hard-bottoms on intertidal and subtidal of subtropical regions and temperate sea areas such as Jeju Island is a highly biodiversity habitat. In addition, the water temperature in aquatic environment is the most common barrier of the habitat environment, so in case of macrobenthos of Jeju Island rocky intertidal and subtidal zone which has different temperature system into North and South, the hypothesis that "There will be a significant difference in community structure due to the difference of the main water temperature in the habitat environment" was built.
After establishing a total of 12 stations which divided rocky intertidal and subtidal zone along the coast of Jeju Island into same interval as much as possible. The research of macrobenthos community structure in subtidal zone was conducted four times for each season from June 2011 to February 2012. The coast of Jeju Island based on the water temperature can be classified by Northwest (NW: station 1~6) and Southeast (SE: station 7~12) and the two regions have statistically significant differences in the water temperature (p<0.05, Mann Whitney's U-test). During the study period, macrobenthos in the subtidal zone emerged a total of 138 species, 145 inds./m2 and 165.95 gWWt/m2. Also, NW and SE showed the correlation between the water temperature (n=48) and the significant quantity in the habitat density (n=48) and biomass (n=48) (p<0.01, Spearman's rank correlation analysis). Macrobenthos in the subtidal zone was found in a total of 473 species, 374 inds./m2 and 193.46 gWWt/m2. The number of species(n=48), the habitat abundance (n=48) and biomass (n=48) all didn't show the significant correlation of the water temperature (Spearman's rank correlation test, p>0.05). The average water temperature of NW and SW which is set up a random value indicated statistically significant differences (p<0.01, Mann Whitney's U-test). However, there was no statistically significant difference between the two communities in macrobenthos community structure (the number of species, abundance and biomass) inhabited two coast (NW and SE) with different average water temperature (p>0.05, Mann Whitney's U-test). According to this, the hypothesis that "There will be a significant difference in community structure due to the difference of the main water temperature in the habitat environment" was rejected. In this way, the reason that macrobenthos community structure of two different habitats showing significant differences in the water temperature doesn't make differences is that only 'water temperature' doesn't play a decisive role in determining macrobenthos community structure in Jeju Island. There will be various causes such as the presence or absence of unpredictable larvae, the presence or absence of settlement space in larval plankton and interspecific or intraspecific competition, indicating various variation in time and space.
