Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to suggest a new approach to Korean long-distance reflexive caki by assuming that there is an interface between syntax and pragmatics. Korean has several reflexive pronouns, including caki, casin, cakicasin, and pronoun-casin. Of them, caki has been most widely investigated. It has often been identified with the so-called long-distance reflexives in other languages such as Chinese ziji, and Japanese zibun. In this thesis, it is shown that this Korean reflexive has properties of bound anaphors in the local and non-local domain and of logophoric pronouns. This thesis attempts to identify the properties of Korean reflexive caki through being compared with Chinese reflexive ziji in accordance with test conditions proposed in the previous studies. In order to achieve the aim, first, as mentioned above, we assume that there exists a syntactic-pragmatic interface for pragmatic information just before the language information is transferred to Conceptual Intentional System to be fully interpreted. To demonstrates the feasibility of this approach, we will make the following assumptions. One of them is to assume that there are two kinds of features which represent dual properties of lexical item caki, originally in the lexicon, that is to say, reflexive features [REF] and [LOG] features for logophoricity. Second, it is assumed that there are major four functional projections which bear pragmatic features, dedicated to pragmatically-motivated functions, such as reported speech, evidentiality, evaluation, epistemological experience following Cinque(1999), Speas(2004) and Nishigauchi(2014). Furthermore, we will also propose the existence of pragmatically functional heads for Speech Act Mood, Evaluative Mood, Evidential Mood and Epistemological Mode in the lexicon. In addition, we have dealt with other theories and constructions that account for pragmatic information structure in terms of long-distance binding properties. We will apply these suggested syntactic functional projections to Korean reflexive caki constructions. In conclusion, it is evident that this study has shown a unified account for Korean long-distance reflexive binding phenomena, which are considered to violate the binding principle in terms of locality condition, by introducing an implicit argument pro as a binder in the Spec of the functional projections in the Pragmatic Phase proposed in this thesis.
