Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify depression and quality of sleep in elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis and to examine the relationship between depression and quality of sleep. The participants of this study were elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis who were more than 65 years old and who were registered at the orthopedic surgery clinic at D medical center in city B. The collected data were analyzed by frequency, percentage,mean and standard deviation, chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA, and Partial correlation using SPSS/WIN 20.0 program. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. The mean score on the depression scale was 7.10 points most participants (72.3%) had depression. The mean score on the quality of sleep index was 8.59 points most participants (67.5%) had poor quality of sleep. The non-depression group and the depression group showed statistically significant differences according to their subjective health condition, severity of knee pain and medical comorbidity. Quality of sleep showed statistically significant differences according to gender, job, subjective health condition, severity of knee pain, medical comorbidity and abdominal-obesity. There was a significant positive correlation between depression and sleep quality. In other words, higher levels of depression were associated with poorer quality of sleep. The results of this study will help healthcare providers understand the relationship between depression and quality of sleep according to general and physiological variables.
