Alternative Title
An Analysis on Business Conditions of Laver Land-Based Seeding Farms
Abstract
Due to the climate change and the aging of the work forces, circumstances of laver aquaculture are getting worse. In this situation, laver land-based seeding is critical for sustainable aquaculture. However, government policies on laver land-based seeding industry were focused on fiscal support with technical development being not seriously considered. In this situation, analyzing the business conditions including economical feasibility and technical status can be helpful to find out development plan for Laver land-based seeding farms in Korea. For this reason, this study is aimed to analyze the business conditions of laver land-based seeding farms in Korea.
Farming revenue and expenses data were collected through survey with laver land-based seeding firms in Korea to determine business conditions of those firms. As a result, returns on sales vary widely from –57% to 73%. This means that technological status and productivity of laver land-based seeding are very unstable.
In this situation, determining proper technical level for stable business is considered important. So, as a measure of technical level, the ideal number of shells used per one unit bed for laver aquaculture(Cheak) by firm was checked through break even point (BEP) analysis. Because the production cost of shell with laver filament takes large share in the total operating costs, farms should try to reduce the amount of those shells. The more shells used by a farm means the lower technical stability. The average BEP of shells used by farms was 91.74 for a single unit.
Also a field study on laver land-based seeding farms in Japan was done and it was compared to the status of Korean to obtain advanced technology. It was done with three separate processes – cultivation, seeding, post-seeding - by the order of laver land-based seeding. At first, during cultivation process, standard for choosing shells for filament and method of cultivation was not set. Also efforts to prevent disease such as cleaning shells with filament and filtering water for cultivation was not relatively enough. Above all things, the conditions for cultivation such as water temperature, brightness, specific gravity of water were not investigated enough to stabilize cultivating shells with filament. Secondly, during seeding process, conditions for emission of conchospores were not researched enough in Korea. Also problems of Korean laver land-based seeding were found on reuse of shell with filament and cleaning of laver aquaculture bed. Lastly, during post-seeding process, detailed management during cell dividing period of conchospore was absent in Korea. Moreover, standard management method for freezing storage of seeded laver bed was not set.
