Alternative Title
A Comparative study on the settlements of soft clay based on field measurements and theorical analyses
Abstract
Soft ground does not have a sole definition. The definition is differed by the size and the importance of the structure being constructed.
Terzaghi’s one-dimensional consolidation theory expresses the compression of soil skeleton as a form of Darcy’s law and force equilibrium by using the law of conservation of mass which illustrates the dissipation of pore water and finally leads one dimensional consolidation equation. However, it can be seen that there is a difference in the measured values due to the assumption of the equation and the contradiction of the boundary conditions.
Generally, the condition of the ground is designed by the theoretical method which includes numerous assumption and empirical method. Measurement management is necessary to confirm the movement of the soft ground.
It is conducted by the installation of measuring instruments such as inclinometer, water level meter, piezometer, differential settlement gauge and settlement plate which are necessary to settling stable management on the primary spot when embanking on the soft ground.
When constructing the structure on the soft ground, the prediction of future settlement is conducted by numerical method such as Skepmtion-Bjerrum method, Lambe’s stress path method and finite element method. The amount of the future settlement can also be estimated by using the measurement data in construction site which includes hyperbolic method, Hoshino’s method, Asaoka’s method and method.
In this study, based on the in-situ measurement data conducted at the terminal time of soft ground consolidation, the amount of settlement was predicted by using hyperbolic method, Asaoka’s method, and method which are methods of predicting the amount of prospective settlement progressed by the time. The applicability of the future settlement prediction method was also evaluated by using the relative error rate and the amount of settlement measured on the spot.
