- Abstract
- Small-scale fisheries (SSFs) play a crucial role as a source of livelihoods, millions of people around the world in both developed and developing countries (Allison and Ellis, 2001) including Fiji. It is estimated around 70 to 80% of the Fijian community reside along the coastal areas heavily rely on fishing as their main sources of living and their wellbeing. However, the current lack of institutional support through the realization of small-scale livelihood outcome has led to the arising of common prob-lems, these problems has a detrimental effect to their social, cultural and political circumstances.
On the other hand, cooperative in SSF’s have been widely adopted in various devel-oped and developing country as a tool to alleviate problems socially, and economi-cally by improving dependent livelihood to many people. The aim of study is to The aim of this study is to ensure the socio-economic status of Small-scale Fisher-ies(SSF)’s by developing fisheries cooperatives to improve the livelihood of SSF’s in Fiji. Particularly certain areas that will focus are the development and implication of this innovation.
The concept of cooperative are promoted by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) in small-scale fisheries as stated by Robert S. Pompey the inclusion of RFSC in the community such in Fiji is the idea behind the concept of cooperative. In order to develop the SSF cooperative in Fiji, various approaches and framework taken from various authors to support the concept of cooperatives.
The innovations to develop fisheries cooperatives in Fiji considered as a new ap-proach, which values different ways of livelihood that will identify the traditional, cultural value, identity that governs the people in the community, in addition, it em-powers fishermen to realize their capacity and roles as one of the social and eco-nomic importance to elevate standard and improved livelihood conditions.
