Abstract

Unlike the past, when rental books were simply available, public libraries have expanded their functions as cultural facilities for enjoying diverse contents as the trend of using libraries has changed with the changes of the times. Although the number of public libraries in Korea is still few and underutilized, multilateral study is needed to activate libraries. As a study of the prior paper, the research on libraries was done mainly in literature information, administrative studies, and the visual information design element of libraries is known to lack the results of architecture-oriented research in the design field. Among the various visual design elements of the library, the sign system provides the user with all basic guiding information to communicate and to help them access and use the information they need. Effective communication via sign requires an overview of the status of the library's sign system and clear guidelines on the unstructured design and installation criteria, etc. However, due to the lack of guidelines for the domestic sign system, this research is designed to improve the existing building standards of a public library based on the assessment of the most active public libraries in Busan Metropolitan Government according to the regulations on construction. Research is used to study literature and to demonstrate its results. The literature research is intended to form a basic study by conducting comparative studies of cases of public structures and universal design guidelines. After that, the criteria for evaluating the sign system is established based on prior studies and empirical studies show that the signatures of each library are set up according to the criteria for evaluation through field visits. The surveyed data were selected as assessment criteria for the three principles of the re-interpretation of sign, legibility, consistency, and continuity on the library side and proposed the suitability of the derived assessment criteria.
