Greening methods on the back of coastal waterproof wall
Abstract
Korea is a peninsular country with three sides of the sea, and it has a coastline of 14,963 km, which is 37% of the circumference of the earth. However, 44%(5,085.7km) of total coastline was transformed into artificial coastline due to the construction of artificial structures such as breakwaters. As a result, many parts were damaged. This study tries to propose methods to recover the damaged landscape and coastal ecosystem function by greening the artificial coastline using halophytes. For this purpose, selected adaptive species through of environmental factor analysis of artificial coastline, vegetation of halophytes habitat & literature survey, and designed greening methods suitable for the environment of target area and species. Adaptive species were selected for 9 kinds of perennial native plants resistant to salinity and drying that live in dry and barren environment such as Rosa wichuraiana, Crepidiastrum lanceolatum, Calystegia soldanella. The greening method is designed as a structure and vegetation base materials that can maximize the use of precipitation with consideration for the characteristics of the target area, so that it is suitable for the dry land and can grow smoothly. Through proposed methods in this study, it is judged that it can contribute to the restoration of the original coastline functions by greening of artificial coastline that are difficult to live in vegetation due to dryness and barrenness.
