- Abstract
- The purpose of this study is to seek an effective teaching approach for the Korean particle '-에다가edaga' for English speaking Korean learners by classifying the meaning of '-에다가edaga' and by exploring the correspondence to English according to the meanings. The object of this study is Korean particle '-에다가edaga', which is approached by the method of the constrative analysis and corpus linguistics.
In chapter 1, the purpose, necessity, object, and method of the study are verified. The flow and limitation of previous research are arranged by examining them. Therefore, the necessity of meaning classification of '-에다가edaga' for English speaking Korean learners in terms of teaching Korean is discovered. And the need for empirical and quantitative study using Korean corpus are discovered.
In chapter 2, the meaning classification system of '-에다가edaga' for English speaking Korean learners is presented. The system is based on dictionaries and corpus analysis. Particle '-에다가edaga' can be used as an adverbial case marker and as a conjunctive particle. The syntactic properties of an adverbial case marker '-에다가edaga' were searched in accordance with the essential relationship between '-에다가edaga' and the predicate. As for semantic functions of adverbial case marker '-에다가edaga', they are 'fixed position', '(abstract) arrival point' and 'addition'. On the other hand, the syntactic properties of conjunctive particle '-에다가edaga' were searched in accordance with combination of '-에다가edaga' with sentence constituents. As for semantic functions of conjunctive particle '-에다가edaga', they are 'enumeration' and 'addition'.
In chapter 3, using a grammar and Korean-English dictionaries, the correspondent expression of '-에다가edaga' to English according to the meanings is analyzed. The results show that the correspondent expression of '-에다가edaga' of 'fixed position(high frequency meaning of '-에다가edaga')' to English is similar to the preposition at, on, in, etc. However, it is clarified that '-에다가edaga' has various aspects according to each meaning.
In chapter 4, the presentation of the Korean particle '-에다가edaga' in the present field of teaching Korean is examined by analyzing Korean language textbooks and then based on the results of the analysis of this study, problems are suggested.
In chapter 5, the plan of education for English speaking Korean learners is presented based on the results of the analysis of the study for teaching Korean. And the significance and limitation of this study are determined. And this thesis concludes with a discussion summarizing the results of the study.
This study is significant as it establishes the first constrastive analysis materials of Korean particle '-에다가edaga'. This material could be used for teaching grammar to English speaking Korean learners through a variety of fields such as the organization of the textbooks, the grammar description of Korean language textbooks and material for Korean classes, etc.
