Comparative Study of muscle activity of the yoga Utkatasana (Chair pose) modifications
Abstract
After menopause, women easily struggle from the change of sensory organ, locomotive organ and cognitive organ due to unbalanced female hormones in addition to the risk of injury caused by sarcopenia compared to men. If sarcopenia is neglected, the treatment is very difficult. That's why prevention is important. The most effective prevention and treatment method for sarcopenia is exercise. The homeostasis should be improved with the constant stimulation to muscles and bones, and continuous efforts to change life habits and eating habit in the good way are necessary. Yoga without regard to age and gender will be helpful to make these problems disappear.
The purpose and necessity of this study is to prevent injuries caused by excessive body movement when unskilled people do yoga and to make them do yoga more healthily.

The subjects of this study are 7 unskilled female students in their 20s who go to P University in Busan and 7 certified yoga instructors who have over 2 years of yoga experience.
We measured muscle activity while skilled and unskilled subjects performed Utkatasana and modified movements and analyzed the measured muscle activity. The results are as follows.

A. In Ukatasana(chair posture) basic movement, skilled subjects had higher muscle activity in muscle vastus lateralis, muscle vastus medialis, anterior tibial muscle and medial gastrocnemius muscle, and there was significant difference.

B. In Ukatasana(chair posture) modified posture 1 movement, skilled subjects had higher muscle activity in muscle semitendinosus, musculus biceps femoris and medial gastrocnemius muscle, and there was significant difference. The unskilled subjects had higher muscle activity in erector spinae muscle and muscle rectus femoris, and there was significant difference.

C. In Ukatasana(chair posture) modified posture 2 movement, skilled subjects had higher muscle activity in muscle semitendinosus, musculus biceps femoris and medial gastrocnemius muscle, and there was significant difference.

D. In Ukatasana(chair posture) modified posture 3 movement, skilled subjects had higher muscle activity in muscle semitendinosus, musculus biceps femoris, muscle vastus lateralis, rectus femoris muscle and anterior tibial muscle, and there was significant difference.
