A STUDY ON THE ACQUISITION OF KOREAN ADVERB
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the acquisition of korean adverb ‘A-MU-RI’ and ‘UL-MA-NA’ for Japanese Korean learners and a studying the efficient way of teaching those adverbs. The necessity of this study is that ‘A-MU-RI’ and ‘UL-MA-NA’ make foreign students(specifically Japanese students) confused because they recognized both words have similar meaning.
‘A-MU-RI’ and ‘UL-MA-NA’ are the adverb of degree and manner in common but different semantic and syntactic features so that Korean first language speakers can easily differentiate those adverbs. Meanwhile Japanese Korean students frequently make substitution errors when using them caused by interference influenced on Japanese. Because ‘I-KU-RA’ and ‘DON-NA-NI’ which are Japanese adverbs have meaning of ‘A-MU-RI’ and ‘UL-MA-NA’ simultaneously.
So, the study conducted the grammaticality judgement test(GJT) consisted of 44 items which evaluated implicit knowledge of ‘A-MU-RI’ and ‘UL-MA-NA’. The analysis found that the words ‘A-MU-RI’ seemed to be more confused than ‘UL-MA-NA’ according to statistical significant difference compare to first language speakers. Also there were no correlation mostly with proficiency and residence period. It means that all Japanese students are having problem with misconception of ‘A-MU-RI’ and ‘UL-MA-NA’, irrespective of proficiency and residence period caused by interference influenced on Japanese.
The study tried to find the efficient way of teaching those two adverbs based on the conclusion of analysis of GJT. These adverbs may need alternative educational methods to be better acquired.
