The Relationship of Leisure Travel Motivation,Constraint and Constraint Management
- Abstract
- This research, composed of three (experimental, pilot, main) studies, is constructed to investigate the relationship of leisure travel motivation, constraint, and constraint
management. The experimental study suggests the pleasure travel constraint management process models through a questionnaire survey, and interviews. Two
hundred and twelve South Korean university students participated in the survey, and forty two South Koreans (aged between 19 and 84 years old) participated in the
interview. The pleasure travel constraint management process I model presents two types of constraints: (1) serious constraints which cannot be overcome and lead to no leisure activity participation, and (2) negotiable constraints, which can be overcome and lead to either travelling or alternative leisure activities. The pleasure travel
constraint management process II model demonstrates three types of constraint haves: serious constraint haves, negotiable constraint haves, and no constraint haves. No
constraint haves travel, and negotiable constraint haves participate in travelling or alternative leisure activities, while serious constraint haves fail to participate in leisure activities.
The pilot study, participated by 24 interviewees, presents the results from the open, axial, selective coding of the grounded theory. Open coding proposes three groups:
travel desire haves without travel constraints, travel desire haves with constraints and travel desire have-nots with constraints. Axial coding suggests four groups: no constraint haves with travel desire, no constraint haves without travel desire, constraint haves with travel desire, and constraint haves without travel desire. Selective coding discovers two groups: travelers with a desire to travel and nontravelers without a desire to travel, indicating the importance of desire in travelling.
The main study is to examine the relationship of park visit motivation, constraint, and constraint management. The questionnaire survey, which was completed by 431 park visitors, presents that (1) park visit motivations play a direct positive role in park visits and also in the constraint management strategies use; (2) park visit constraints
play a direct negative role in park visits; and (3) constraint management strategies play a direct positive role in park visits.
