Abstract

This study is to analyze the leadership of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Since 2016, Japan and China put diplomatic pressure on South Korea. Japan demands South Korea to follow the ‘12.28 comfort women agreement’ and China requires South Korea to withdraw the THAAD system. In order to understand why these two nations are taking hard-line position against South Korea, it is necessary to study about the leader of both countries. The current leader of Japan is Shinzo Abe and the leader of China is Xi Jinping. Therefore, analyzing Abe and Xi as a leader would be necessary to understand current Japan and China. The main purpose of this research is to figure out the characteristics of Abe and Xi’s leadership. In order to analyze their leadership, this research uses the theories of ‘transactional leadership’, ‘transformational leadership’ and ‘creative leadership’ as an analyzing tool. At the same time, this study collects Abe and Xi’s domestic policies and foreign policies, after they became the leader of Japan and China, as the data to find out which of the three leaderships that they are close to. Because, a leader tends to be evaluated by his careers like policies that he enforced during his term. Research method of this study is an interdisciplinary approach. Using this research approach to understand their policy making process in multilateral view. For example, Abe and Xi have their own history as a politician. It is worthy to find out how does the history influences in their policy making and the leadership. Not only historical way, but also sociological or economical view can be necessary to analyze their leadership. Thus, this study is using interdisciplinary approach to research Abe and Xi’s leadership. After analyzing their leadership, the research is move on to comparing the result of Abe and Xi’s leadership analysis. Because, they have some similarities and differences in their characteristics and policies. Therefore, the aims of the research is to analyze current Japanese leader Shinzo Abe and Chinese leader Xi Jinping by using the theories of transactional leadership, transformational leadership and creative leadership to find out what kind of leadership that they possess. And comparing their leadership to figure out similarities and differences.
