영한 번역에 나타난 영어전치사 with의 한국어 대응 표현 연구

Abstract

This study aims at Korean translations of the English preposition 'with', especially translation patterns of 'with.' The preposition 'with' can be translated to various Korean words so this study showed how the preposition 'with' is changed into certain Korean particles. Basically 'with' has two major meanings, 'company' and 'method.' This paper attempted to discover the rules of a translation pattern into Korean based on the different meanings of 'with.' For this study, I referred to two English novels and their translated books for analysis. One of the two is The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, and the other is Animal farm, sampling 110 sentences that are including the preposition 'with'. The first purpose of this study is to divide the meanings of 'with' into 10 categories and to check the frequency of their responsive particles in Korean. Among the 10 meanings, 'with' as 'method' is used the most. 'With' as 'method' accounts for 24.5 percent and they are translated into korean as '(eu)ro'. The second meaning of 'with' as 'accompanied' accounts for 16.4 percent, and its adverb of manner accounts for 16.4% as well ('with' as 'accompanied' can be translated into korean as ‘~rang gachee', ‘~wa hamkeh’ ,or ‘~(eu)ro’, and the adverb of manner is translated into Korean as either '~gea' or '~(eu)ro'.) I hope this study can help Korean students to understand the English preposition 'with' and also help other foreign students who speak English as their second language.
