Abstract

This essay analyzes Ju YoSeop’s diaspora life and novels during his stay in Beijing and Shanghai, China and America with the viewpoint of post-colonial. Based on the Killing and the Price of First Love in his Shanghai period, the Study in America and Catch Hold of Cloud in his American period, and the Restaurant in Bongcheon Station in his Beijing period, this essay also analyzes the subaltern life in Ju YoSeop’s novels as well as the the other consciousness occurred in the subaltern life and the ethnic identity due to immigration. People remember Ju YoSeop always because he is the writer of the visitor in Sarang room and Mother or the anti-conventional scheool literature. However, his literature surprisingly shows a tendency and look of diversity. Since he visited a lots of countries, his special immigration experience exercises a great influence on his novels. During his stay in Shanghai, America and Beijing before liberation, he created lots of novels with great study value, among which the diaspora novels on the background of China and America should be spoken highly. Chapter Ⅰ the Introduction illuminated the study purpose and necessary, previous study, study method and study range. Chapter Ⅱ the Diaspora and post-colonial defines the diaspora and post-colonial. In the post-colonial, the definition of subaltern, the other and ethnic identity is closely related to the diaspora. Chapter Ⅲ Ju YoSeop’s life and novels generally concludes his life experience in China and America, as well as his diaspora novels during this time. It also analyzes Ju YoSeop’s life environment and the difference of his inner world in Shanghai, America and Beijing, including how these factors influenced his novels. Chapter Ⅳ the Ethnic Identity studies the Japanese colonization and the white race ethnic discrimination in his diaspora novels, also studies how the two factors influenced the ethnic identity consciousness. The final conclusion is that the ethnic identity consciousness in Ju YoSeop’s novels increases gradually. The Subaltern Consciousness studies the process of subaltern’s resistance, confusion and wane. The final conclusion is that the subaltern in Ju YoSeop’s novels is on the wane after resistance. Ju YoSeop’s diaspora novels spread the immigration space to Shanghai, America and Beijing, especially the Study in America and Catch Hold of Cloud could be the earliest novels on the background of America and Mexico in Korean literature history, which is quite extraordinary. Meanwhile, Ju YoSeop’s diaspora novesl provide a precious resources for the representation and stury of Korean immigration during the Japanese occupation period. This essay is not limited to few works to comment on Ju YoSeop’s novels and tried the best tot prove his core literature is the diaspora novels. It proves his immigration experience and the diaspora novels play a big role in Korean modern literature. This essay studies on Ju YoSeop’s diaspora novels, it deserves if there is any complement or help in the level of revaluation.
