Abstract

Rattanakosin Island is a historical city of Bangkok situated on both sides of Chao Phraya River. It is a center of living heritage represents Thai identity through arts and architectures of the Rattanakosin era. It is vital for the history and archaeology of Thailand. It is a location of the old community which later becomes the capital of Thailand, so called Bangkok. Being an old city, Rattanakosin Island has been promoted to be the major cultural attraction. Therefore, Rattanakosin Island should be conserved old city era, thus there is a development of the new city due to the activities and life style of the modern life which is not conformed to the conservation of the old city. Decay and lack of maintenance for this precious historic sites and buildings have partially been replaced by modern construction which impacts the visual aspect of the old city Rattanakosin Island. Meanwhile, management of promoting cultural tour is inappropriate. Moreover, there is no cooperation between government sectors and participation of the residents regard to the conservation and sustainable development of the old city. This research about Tha Chang area that situated in Rattanakosin Island, beside Chao Phraya River. Tha Chang is important as intersection of several kinds of transportation and also housing, livelihood of the people since the king Rama 1 era. Hopefully the design and develop directions that suggested in this research can solving problems and develop Tha Chang not only public facilities, and also economic, social, environment and good image of old city to promote cultural tourism and sustainable living.
