The Effects of English Language Study Abroad Program on English Communication Skills.
Abstract
Foreign language communication skill, especially English ability is the essential part in this era of globalization. So, university students going abroad in English speaking countries have constantly increased in South Korea. Study English Abroad Program requires prudence and courage because it is the first step to the unknown world. This thesis aims to help students plan their study efficiently by researching the conditions of Study Language Abroad and distinctive features of each English speaking country. Furthermore, it suggests effective ways of using English Study Aborad by finding the beneficient factors in English ability improvement.
10 students who have experienced English Study Aborad Programs were questioned about how the programs have influenced their English communication skills in speaking, listening, reading, writing and grammar. This study also researched the beneficient factors in improving those skills.
First, the field that has shown the highest sense of accomplishment was listening skill and the highest increase came in speaking skill. The increase in speaking proficiency achievement coincides with their increased confidence in English speaking.
Secondly, the main factors to improve English skills were definitely increased English speaking time, classes of the institute(especially, General English and Cambridge Exam course), and after school activity, expecially debating program. Furthermore, foreign friends who have similar or a bit better English proficiency were helpful for the improvement of their communication skill.
Lastly, to use Study Abroad Programs effectively, not only active attitude during the period, but also speaking practice with the specific goal in mind were important. And, ways to maintain and improve English ability after finishing up the programs were recommended. I hope this study would help those who are preparing for the Study English Abroad Programs accomplish them successfully.
