Abstract

The appreciation of classics can be easily misunderstood as a difficult and boring stuff not only to general readers but also to the students in classroom because classics are so far from modern readers. Thus, if background knowledge is not properly given, reading classics becomes meaningless to the students.

On the other hand, classics reflect the social and cultural coherence of the times, so the complete appreciation of a classic also becomes getting a huge structure of background knowledge useful to the various situation the students will encounter.

Schema means the background knowledge and the structure of it. While the teaching method for "Heosaengjeon" has been developed through various studies, the part of forming the schema is not concentrated upon or in most cases, limited to the usage of image media. Because of this limitation, the learning goal, the appreciation of literature to understand and reorganize the social and cultural situation, didn't seem to be accomplished.

Though there were many cases whose subjects were developing creativity in the study on literature education, creativity could be demonstrated by forming sufficient schema and its usage. To aim at developing creativity without connecting proper schema is likely to grow plants without watering.

Therefore, in this thesis I have suggested the educational method for schema formation as a method of showing up the point of level-differentiated classes in revised 2007 curriculum, and a method of increasing the efficiency of learning classics. And I have aimed at researching the effective teaching method for "Heosaengjeon".

For this purpose, I looked through the previous studies related on the education of "Heosaengjeon" and have proposed a model of instruction for schema formation according to before_reading, on_reading, and after_reading, as an example that is useful to smooth schema formation.
