- The Effects of Verbal Violence, Coping Patterns, Social Support and on Job Stress in Integrated Nursing Care Service Unit Nurses

Abstract
Purpose
This study was intended to determine the influencing factors of the job stress for nurses who provide a integrated nursing care service units and to explore ways to reduce job stress, and to create a safe nursing environment.
Method
The participants were 213 nurses who worked at 6 small-medium sized hospital in integrated nursing care service units located in Busan. The researchers surveyed the participants with a structured self-report questionnaire form from December 29, 2017 to January 13, 2018. For the analysis, the study used a job stress measuring tool developed by Gu and Kim (1984) and later modified and supplemented by Lee & Koh (2015), a verbal violence measuring tool developed by Nam (2005) and later modified and supplemented by Ku (2007), a coping patterns to verbal violence measuring tool developed by Gwon(2007) and later modified and supplemented by Bae (2012), social support measuring tool developed by Park (1985) and later modified and supplemented by Kim (2008). The collected data was analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation; t-test, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and multiple regression via SPSS/WIN 23.0 program.
Results
1. The average for verbal violence was 2.14 out of a scale of 5. For the sub-categories; from patients was 2.66, from guardian was 2.32 from doctor was 1.87, from team nurses was 1.72. The average score of coping patterns to verbal violence was 3.15 out of a scale of 5. For the sub-categories; problem-focused coping was 3.36, emotion-focused coping was 2.89. The average score of social support was 3.52 out of a scale of 5. The average score for job stress was 2.39 out of a scale of 4.
2. Regarding the general sample characteristics, job stress showed significant differences according to level of education(t=-2.08, p=.039)and pay satisfaction(t=-2.31, p=.022).
3. The Characteristics of job stress was found to have positive correlations with verbal violence from patients(r=.452, p<.001), verbal violence from guardian(r=.404, p<.001), verbal violence from doctors(r=.347, p<.001), and verbal violence from team nurses(r=.335, p<.001). Social support(r=-.057, p=.408), problem-focused coping(r=.003, p=.965), and emotion-focused coping(r=.057, p=.406) didn’t correlate with job stress.
4. It was found that factors influencing the job stress of characteristics were as follows: verbal violence from patient(β=0.387, p=.001), verbal violence from team nurses(β=.154, p=.028), and level of education(β=.142, p=.018). The explanatory power was 25.0%.
Conclusion
As for factors influencing of job stress, verbal violence from patient, verbal violence from team nurses, and level of education were found to be significant. In order to decrease the level of job stress of nurses participating in integrated nursing care service, it is necessary to support the hospital organization for the nurses who simultaneously study and work, and to develop and provide effective coping program through accurate analysis of job stress due to verbal violence.
