Abstract

The FDI(Foreign direct investment) of Korean SMEs(Small and Medium sized Enterprises) in the world has been on an upward trend. Many SMEs have successfully invested overseas during the period, but a large number of them have been in the state of observing and planning FDI. In a large number of studies on FDI in SMEs there are a lot of studies on enterprises that have already invested abroad, but few studies have been made on small and medium enterprises that plan to invest abroad, especially the research on the intention of FDI in SMEs planning to FDI. Besides, the intention of FDI is closely related to direct investment abroad. Therefore, it is very necessary and meaningful to study the SME's FDI intention. And the research on the determinants of FDI is very frontier. This study collated and summarized the determinants of FDI, and analyzed if these determinants could affect the SME's FDI intention. Then this study made a comparative analysis of the factors that influence the overseas investment of enterprises and the factors that influence the FDI intention. Based on the research, a model Hypotheses was set to measure the model, We surveyed SME enterprises belonging to Busan and Gyungnam Province collected 145 questionnaires of new FDI intention. The results of this study are derived from Reliability analysis, validity analysis, correlation coefficient analysis and multiple regression analysis. According to the results, we could draw a conclusion that the SME's competitive strength in domestic has a negative (-) impact on the SME's FDI intention in the classification of industrial characteristics. In the classification of the cognitive factors of the investing countries, the market size of the target countries has positive (+) effect on the SME's FDI intention. At the same time, the age number of employees and the average selling amount also play an important role on the SME's FDI intention. The growth rate of SMEs in their domestic industries and the cultural differences between the domestic country and the countries that have planned to FDI have little effect on the SME's FDI intention. This study mainly focused on the SMEs in Busan and Gyeongnam Province in the form of questionnaire survey. This approach is geographically limited. Besides, there is no classification analysis and comparison of SMEs in the industry. Therefore, further research on the SME's FDI intention by other local companies and industries is needed.
